Douglas strongly believes in encouraging pilots to take their flying skills beyond that required at PPL level. He learned to fly at the age of 17 during his days as a student with the University Air Squadron on the much loved Chipmunk and trained in aerobatics from the start.  He went on to represent the Glasgow Squadron in the annual National Aerobatic Competition, winning the Scottish section.

Following University, flying took a back seat while Douglas concentrated on family and a career in Medicine, but he returned to his early passion after a twenty five year absence and took up aerobatics once more. He has now been flying aerobatics for the last ten years, teaching for the last four and decided to concentrate on this, his first love, full time two years ago, following a long and successful career as a surgeon. 

Whether carrying out initial tailwheel training, aerobatic instruction or unusual attitude recovery training, his careful teaching style will allow you to build confidence at your own pace and have you feeling right at home in the Super Decathlon in no time at all.

Training on the Super Decathlon takes place at Cumbernauld airport, which is conveniently situated in central Scotland, roughly midway between Glasgow and Stirling off the main motorway network. It is also easily accessible from Edinburgh.

It is a busy and well serviced GA field with one east / west tarmac runway, good hangarage, fire service and an excellent on site cafe and aviation shop, with Leading Edge and the Cumbernauld flying club operating from there as well as PDG helicopters.

Despite its location off a busy road network and on the edge of an industrial park, it enjoys a pleasant outlook to the rolling landscape of the Campsie hills, south of Stirling and is just minutes flight time from the famous and historic hilltop castle and the nearby Wallace monument. Free airspace north of Glasgow's control zone, less than a five minute flight from the field, allows for efficient use of your flight time and a good aerobatic training area.

Time spent on the ground won't be lost either, with the beautiful and famous Loch Lomond lying in the nearby Trossachs National Park, local historic attractions of Stirling, the gentle countryside of Strathallan, not to mention easy access to Scotland's Capital, your flying course could easily form part of a wider holiday to the heartland of Scotland.
