The African Aero Safari service was set up by long time bush pilot and adventurer Dave Vanderspuy, who's father was the co-founder of the South African Air Force in 1921.

Dave grew up around aeroplanes and was fascinated by that golden era of adventurous flying in stick and rudder machines which lead their pilots to remote locations into the South African bush. This kind of flying demanded a high level of self dependency but also offered a freedom that seems to have waned with the passing of that time.

While studying Aeronautics at Stellenbosch University, Dave learned to fly and his passion for back to basics, real flying grew. With rising costs, he  had to leave his dreams for true flying behind for a while, but eventually was able to buy a Cessna 210 from the States and he spent the next few years flying the length and breadth of Southern Africa on Safari and as Dave puts it; 'with my head out of the cockpit.' Though Dave is a qualified IR pilot, instruments hold little interest for him and it is the true 'seat of the pants' flying in the remote South African Bush that he is passionate about and that he has built up vast amounts of experience in.

It is this experience that inspired him to bring that kind of flying to a wider audience and that he passes on to any pilot that utilises his services..

The work-horses and main aircraft used on the Air Safaris are the PA28 and the Cessna 172, which both offer comfortable performance with two up plus bags and rugged reliability in the South African Bush.

These aircraft are sourced from various aircraft rental companies around Johannesberg and will be of varying age and fit. Each one however, is maintained to the highest standards.

We advise pilots to get checked out on both these types, prior to coming to South Africa for the license validation, as availability can vary until the day of departure. Make sure you have log-book evidence of this and bring it with you when you come.

If not already completed, we also advice that a 'variable pitch prop' sign off is also beneficial, as it will allow you to fly other types such as the C182 or PA235 should availability on the standard aircraft be limited.
